Shewhart, Walter A.

Definition

Walter Shewhart (1891-1967) is considered the father of Statistical Process Control. He was employed by the Western Electric Company from 1918 to 1925 before joining parent company Bell Telephone at Bell Telephone Laboratories. He retired from there in 1956.

He was a long-time colleague and collaborator with W. Edwards Deming who championed Shewhart’s ideas in Japan after WWII. Deming represented Shewhart’s continuous improvement philosophy in the Plan-Do-Check-Act cycle and coined the phrase Shewhart Cycle.
