A random variable notation signifying the response variable or measurable output from a process that we are interested in analyzing in order to improve the process.

In a cake-baking experiment to improve the texture of the cake, the output is the texture of the cake. The output variable Y consists of the values used to measure the varying levels of texture. By changing the levels of the ingredients in the recipe and noting their effects on the texture, optimum conditions can be determined that produce the ideal cake texture.
