Definition

A project Champion is a high-ranking manager who will work with a Black Belt to ensure that barriers to project success are removed and the project team has the organizational support it needs to be effective.

In Rath and Strong's Six Sigma Leadership Handbook (2003), the following Champion responsibilities are outlined:

- Ensuring that resources are available for training projects
- Participating in project reviews
- Participating in project selection and scoping
- Providing strategic direction for the project team
- Staying informed about the team's progress
- Helping the Black Belt overcome roadblocks
- Keeping the team focused on the desired results
- Redirecting the team's activities if unexpected events occur
- Keeping the senior management team informed
- Being accountable for results
