Definition

An Independent Variable is an input (X) to a process, changes in which potentially influence the output (Y) variable. Also known as a Factor, it may be controllable (such as machine settings) or uncontrollable (such as environmental conditions).

Examples

In a study to evaluate the effects of different levels of training and mentoring and on the performance of employees, training and mentoring are the independent variables and employee performance is the response variable.
